Kanebo was established as a cotton trading company in 1887 at Kanegafuchi in Tokyo. In 1908, business was expanded to include manufacture and trade in silk.
In 1936, Kanebo introduced its first cosmetic product "SAVON DE SOIE", a silk-based soap. This name will always be remembered in the company's history as the first step towards the Kanebo cosmetics business of today.
The year 1960 saw a major transformation for Kanebo when the company decided to enter the beauty business committing itself to a wide range of beauty-related businesses. The cosmetics division was expanded to a major operation, based upon the technological capabilities built up since the foundation of the spinning business, and using the companyÕs research and development strengths to create a wide range of unique new products that would eventually make Kanebo one of Japan's leading cosmetics manufacturers.
After starting operations in Hong Kong and Bangkok in 1961, the company started the business in Europe in 1979. Today Kanebo is active in 49 countries and regions of the world, from Europe and the USA to the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia, with Cosmetic Research Centres in France and the USA.
